Back to School: New Year, New Styles!

Hello all of my Fall Fashionistas,

It’s time to put away the sunglasses and break out the school supplies because with September just around the corner, back-to-school shopping is in full swing. To some, going back to school brings jitters, but with a little planning, you can make going back to school simple and stress-free. Wearing something new can help your child feel more at ease and you don’t have to spend a lot to get a lot. If you’re a fashion forward parent, you can get your kids up to speed with clothes that are both comfy and current. Wanting to know the latest trends for the fall season, I enlisted the help of Savvy Shopper Miss Olivia for her keen sense of tween style and headed down to the Children’s Place.

After taking one look around the store, it was obvious the 80’s are back with a vengeance. Younger girls are going crazy over leggings, graphic tees and striped threads. You wore them in the 80s and now they are back as the perfect way to mix lazy-gal fashion with that fun retro look.
Mix-and-match clothing is at the top of the list this season and as Olivia points out, this skirt ($14.50) can easily be paired with a jacket ($34.50) and leggings ($10.50) to turn an old summer style into a new fall one.

Since the majority of your child's time will be spent in casual clothes, they need to be durable enough to handle a variety of tough situations. Denim is always in style because you can dress it up with flats ($19.50), or pair it with pink faux-Ugg boots ($26.50) like the one’s Olivia spotted from across the store and were undoubtedly her favorite find of the day. She also found this great jean jacket ($24.99) and wide leg pant ($16.50) in deep blue for 25% off.  Pair with “My Perfect Look” graphic tee (2 for $15) for a great way to show off your own unique personality and style.

In addition to denim, wool fabrics like tweed and flannel ($16.50) will be a big hit as we move into fall. Olivia found this cute sweater dress in pink which is perfect for keeping warm on cooler days

Back-to-school shopping can get expensive, but it doesn’t have to be if you know where to go. With Labor Day sales coming up, this is a great time to get all of your back-to-school fashion needs at discount prices. Woodburn Company Stores offers other great tween fashion stores such as Aeropostale, Gap Generation, PacSun and Zumiez. For your other little ones, check out Carter’s, Gymboree and OshKosh B’Gosh and turn back-to-school shopping into one-stop shopping.

Kanye's Got Nothing On Me

Hello Deal Divas,

In an effort to stay on top of the latest trends in fashion and pop culture for you my savvy shoppers, I felt it was necessary to jump on the proverbial band wagon and follow the latest, most popular Twitter star: Kanye West. Now, I know this guy has an ego the size of Greg Oden but the guy can make music and has a pretty keen sense of style...until I saw this:

Leather shorts? Shorts. Made out of leather. With pleats, on a man. I'm at a loss for words. If jean leggings are called jeggings, what on earth do you call this? Lorts? Sheathers? Or just avoid them entirely?

I'm going with the latter.

In an effort to bring real leather style to light I headed down to the grand opening of Wilsons Leather this morning at Woodburn Company Stores.

I was lucky enough to meet with Marty, Director of Stores, Steve the DSM and a slew of other style savvy Wilsonites from all over the country that gave me insight into the hot fall fashions from Wilsons. I was surprised when I found much, much more than just leather. I was able to put together a little sampling of the fun things I found:

For those of you who try and avoid leather, Wilsons has a great line of "Leather Touch" which was hard to tell apart from the real deal. Plus, they have a truly huge selection of wool pea coats and trenches.

One of my favorite handbags in the store was this little beauty. I loved the so-soft leather, great fall colors and lovely little details. The best part: This bag was originally $100 but you can find it at Wilsons for $39.99! You better act fast though, the manager said they were flying off the shelves.

Plus, I would have never thought that Wilsons Leather carried luggage at amazing outlet prices. With all of the traveling I'll be doing this fall and winter there was no way I could leave the store without this red 24" expandable case for $32 after discount. That's a 68% savings off the original retail price. If only I could snag those kind of savings with the airlines...

The moral of this leather story: Never judge a brand by its logo. You'll be surprised, as I was, at the amazing selection and variety you will find in stores that you thought you knew. Oh, and just say no to tan leather shorts.

Meet our 3 Savviest Shopper Contest Winners and Deal Divas

Alright Savvy Shoppers,

We asked: What makes you the Savviest Shopper of all. And you answered. The winners of our Savviest Shopper contest, Anati, Nicola, and Andrea, gave us a glimpse into their stash of savvy secrets and in turn won a $250 shopping spree at Woodburn Company Stores. They had 4 hours to buy as much as they could and then dish their savings for you! Here are a few of their favorite finds...

Anati

This 28 year old professional had one thing on her mind when she came in for her shopping spree: Work, work, work! It all paid off when she snagged some of the best deals of the day at Dressbarn.

Check out this super fashionable zebra-print dress with an attached red belt. Originally $39.99, Aanti got his dress 30% off, making it $27.99. She told us she saw a similar dress at another retailer for over $90!

Along with other amazing pieces, like a classic black skirt and golden yellow dress (only $17.50), Anati managed to find items that she could mix and match with things that she already owned. Nothing makes you feel better than knowing you paid $35 for a skirt/top set that you will be able to get so many different outfits out of. See Anati's video explaining how she plans to make the most of her purchases:

Nicola

Nicola is one of our international Savvy Shoppers; a British-born girl that brings all of her visiting friends and family from the UK to shop the hot deals at Woodburn Company Stores.

She brought to light a great trick on her Savviest Shopper shopping spree: Name brand hair care for less. She buys her Paul Mitchell shampoos and conditioners at the Perfect Look outlet; 2 bottles for $35. Nicola has seen the same product at Target for $25 a bottle. It's an easy $15 in your pocket and you can't help but trust a girl with such cute hair!

At one point, Nicola stopped in during hour 2 of the alloted 4 to tell us that she was having the hardest time getting rid of her $250 gift card. While at DKNY she found a great pair of shoes that she thought were marked down from $90 to $60, a good chunk of her money, but when she took them to the counter, they rung up at $15...Don't know about you, but we would call that a shopping WIN!

Andrea

We stole so many Savvy Shopper secrets from Andrea, that it's hard to count. Some of our favorite buys from her that day included this classic tank top in a military green, which is super hot for back-to-school this year. Now, this tank top retails for $16.99; we've all bought tanks and undershirts from our favorite retailers at prices like these but Andrea managed to snag this top at Banana Republic Factory Store for only $3.50. She really put it into perspective for us when she mentioned that her tank top cost less than her morning latte. Does this mean we pay way too much for full retail essentials or too much for good coffee? Either way we were impressed. Andrea also snagged those gold bangles and earrings from Banana for $19.

But nothings feels quite as good as good as buying a classic piece for your wardrobe for 89% off...That's right, Andrea found a classic skirt at White House Black Market, originally $88, for only $9.99. Plus, walking in to a room with heels like that and knowing they only cost $30 makes them that much sexier!

Savviest Shopper Contest

Hi Savvy Shoppers,

Now, not to brag but I just found some amazing deals that I have to share! Okay, I am bragging: Today, I found this beautiful stainless steel saucepan from Le Creuset. You can find this same saucepan at department stores for $210, but at their outlet location in Woodburn, I found it for $160 and then on sale at 50% off. I scored this brand name piece for $80. I would say that is a shopping win!

Back to school has been on my mind, well, since school got out. But don't worry, I found more great deals at The Children's Place, like these polos for only $5! Five colors, five days in a week, $25 bucks...Not a bad way to start the school year.

Think that you're a savvy shopper too? Do you love the thrill of scoring your favorite brands on sale, on sale again, and then marked down? Do you brag about how much you saved, not how much you spent? If so, you need to enter Woodburn Company Stores' "I'm a Savvy Shopper" contest. Tell them why you think you're the savviest shopper of them all and you could win a $250 shopping spree to prove it. Then brag about how much you saved to all your friends. Click Here to enter!

Good luck and happy shopping!

Hang Out(doors) with Merrell!

Hello, all of my Savvy Sun Goddesses!

Attention all women who love style… and the outdoors! After a damp and cool spring, the sun is finally here, and to most of us vitamin D-lacking Oregonians, this means spending more time outdoors soaking up the rays. Whether you are working in the garden, hiking the trails, or walking around your favorite outlet mall, keeping your feet cool and comfortable in the summer heat is a must. If you’re the outdoorsy type, you know that walking long hours outside requires shoes that are both functional and comfortable. Although those strappy sandals of yours might be cute, your feet deserve shoes suitable for all your outdoor activities. We know deep down there is a little bit of the wild in all of us, which is why I know you will love Merrell and their versatile selection of outdoor footwear.

All of Merrell’s shoes include built-in arch support, designed to bring the sole closer to your foot, as well as patented Air Cushion soles that make you feel like you’re walking on air (trust me, it’s heaven). For the seasoned outdoor pro, Merrell offers a broad range of climbing, running and hiking boots, such as the multi-purpose Siron Sync that features unique lacing for ultimate comfort.

When you’re off the trail, Merrell carries stylish adventure sandals, comfy moccasins and hi-tech water-sport shoes that are slip resistant, light weight and super cute (my favorite are the stylish top-sider look-alikes below). You can ditch your clingy cotton tops as well, because Merrell carries items like the quick-dry, breathable shirt with built-in bra featured below, designed to reflect moisture off your skin and keep you feeling as dry and comfy as your feet.

Merrell carries women’s shoe sizes 5-11, including half sizes, with prices ranging from $40-$160. My favorite part is that these shoes are designed to be worn in all types of weather, so when the rainy months of Oregon return, these shoes will STILL be keeping my feet cool and dry (but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves!) Stop in today to receive 20-70% off and check out the newest addition to the Woodburn Company Stores!

Hot Styles at Esprit's New Northwest Outlet

Good Morning Savvy Savers,

Now, I know that the last time you wore Esprit it was probably an over-sized logo sweatshirt and neon tote bag in the '80s. But while we may have moved on to other exciting trends in the 90s (crop-tops), Esprit was going strong in departments stores and across the globe, holding its post as the 4th largest retailer in the world.  And now Esprit is back with its first Northwest outlet, the companies largest, at Woodburn Company Stores in Oregon.

Leaving my images of stone-washed jeans and the 90210 aside, I headed over the Esprit for some investigation of my own. While there, I was lucky enough to meet the incredibly fashionable Barcley, Esprit's Director of Creative Services for North America, as they were setting up the new store. Along with snapping photos of the new digs, I picked Barcley's brain about what Esprit has to offer our fashion-conscious outlet shoppers.

After a wealth of information from Barcley, the thing that struck me the most was the amount of styles and product Esprit has; casual to dressy, men's to women's, and loads of denim. There was truly something there for everyone. Not only did the styles range but so did the price. From the massive clearance corner they've set up to the newest dress for a night out, Esprit's prices range from around $9.99-$69.99 depending on what you're looking for. Esprit's sizes have quite the range as well; 0-14/XS-XXL for women and 28w-38w/XS-XXL for men, offering almost every shopper an option.

While poking around I managed to find my first purchase for their grand opening on Friday, May 28th...This so-soft orange zip up. I love these ultra lightweight zips because they fit easily into a purse or tote. There is a point every summer where I find myself at a friend's backyard BBQ when the sun is going down. It's still nice out but I just need that extra layer on top to fend off the chill. This jacket fits the bill, plus the high collar is so fashion-forward and the ruching is flattering for any figure. Don't worry guys, they have some great high-collar zips for you that are just as comfortable and fashionable.

When asked what his favorite pieces were, Barcley told me that checked, woven button-down shirts and clean polished bottoms were going to be huge for men this summer. He also loved Esprit's linen pant and fun tank tops with bright colors and patterns, like this, for the ladies.

Esprit is also a great place to shop for denim, with relaxed and tailored looks for men and smart fit and boot-cut looks for women. I love a store that has all of the pieces to my shopping puzzle and great jeans are always a tough piece. At Esprit I can put together good looking denim with other great pieces I find around the store. Instant outfit!!  And for you, my fans, I snuck in a few shots since they haven't even been taken out of the box yet!  Love that dark wash...

So put aside any reservations you may have about your favorite 80s brand and stop by Esprit's grand opening this Friday, May 28th at Woodburn Company Stores. They will also be participating in the Woodburn's $9.99 and Less sale going on Memorial Day Weekend. I can almost guarantee you will find something you like at a price you'll love!

Happy Shopping

Staying Cool with Icebreaker

Good morning, Deal Finders,

The scene: Portland airport. Me, hustling from the Delta check-in counter, through security, hopping on one foot as I tear off another shoe and throw it in the tub. Laptop’s out, shampoo into plastic baggies, and carry-on items on the scanner as I try not to tie up the 50 people behind me. All of a sudden, a thought crosses my mind: I am wearing a wool shirt. I should be itchy, sweating and entirely uncomfortable during the dash to catch my flight. Yet I am cool, comfortable, and look incredibly stylish on a sunny Oregon day. I am wearing Icebreaker’s 100% merino wool, ¾ length sleeve, V-neck tee.

48 hours ago I was a skeptic. There is no way that wool clothing could be comfortable and breathable, let alone be something that a person could do an airport-workout in! That was until I had the chance to sit down with Icebreaker’s regional manager, John, and store manager, Kevin, while they were setting up their newest store and talk about why Icebreaker is such an amazing product.

Yes, since Icebreaker makes wool products, they have a number of great items that will keep you warm in an Oregon winter (or fall and spring for that matter) but the coolest part about Icebreaker to is its functionality outside of keeping a girl warm. Kevin and John were telling me that one of the things people don’t know about Icebreaker is that their merino wool is actually a “super duper fabric” that not only felt soft but was also breathable and odor resistant, making it perfect fabric for our active Northwest lifestyles. Even in the summer. They carry shirts, sweaters, hoodies, socks, running tights, and yes, even underwear! I had doubt written all over my face until Kevin handed me a gorgeous blue tee and black cami and told me that I wouldn’t believe him until I tried it. And believe me, I put these items to the test. As John put it, "once you go wool, you never go back!"

Not only did my Icebreaker keep me cool and dry in the airport hustle. But here I am, 24 hours after my flight to Orlando on the hot, humid patio in the very same blue wool shirt. The airline has lost my luggage. Still cool, still dry and surprisingly fresh. After laying the garment out last night, it was ready to wear, zero odor, and wrinkle free this morning. WOW!

One thing the guys talked about was the difference between the synthetic fibers that are blended into almost all of our clothes, and the all-natural fabric that makes up Icebreaker's clothing. This fabric won’t pill, is super tough, and is machine washable!  Kevin told me you can “wear the heck out of it” and really put it to the test on his 6-month hike through the Appalachian Mountains in his Icebreaker. After 180 days with a heavy pack on his back, he finally started to see signs of wear to his t-shirt. The last shirt I bought lasted 3 washes before I was using it to clean my mini-blinds.

Another reason I’m raving about Icebreaker is because they are an innovatively sustainable company. All merino sheep that contribute to Icebreaker’s line live the high life on small farms in New Zealand. One sheep will produce about 5 garments. You can even find out where your Icebreaker came from by tracking its Baacode; Yes, say it out loud, "Baaaaaaacode!" Each garment has its own individual code that you can enter at Icbreaker.com. Your Baacode will lead you back to the New Zealand farms that the wool in your garment came from and even watch video of the farmers themselves.

Icebreaker has been making a name for itself worldwide for 15 years and is now staking its claim in the Americas. They are currently opening their 3rd North American store at Woodburn Company Stores in Woodburn, Oregon on May 21st . The best part about lucky store number 3 is that it will be an outlet and will be carrying product directly from their retail stores, a few seasons back, but at prices 25-50% off. Icebreaker makes baselayer, underwear, tees, tights, sweaters and jackets for men, women and children. So whether you’re looking for a comfortable tee to hike in, baselayer for Mt. Hood this winter, or some new running gear, you can find high quality, all natural clothing from a sustainable company at Icebreaker.

I just can’t say enough about why I love this product, but you’ll have to trust me when I tell you to visit Kevin at their Woodburn location to try it out for yourselves…at a discount, of course. Happy Shopping!

Cinco de Oh, Mayo!

As if I really needed a good reason to shop. And drink margaritas. But since the weather isn't being very festive, I'm going to fiesta in other ways! Join me at the Woodburn CAbi Factory Store this afternoon...not only do they have a great sale and raffle tickets to win a $50 gift card, but they'll have non-alcoholic margaritas from 12-4 pm. I do need a new pair of slacks (CAbi's are the best...long, and machine washable), so this is a great excuse. Ole!

Robeez Hits The Outlets

Hi, Ladies,

This weekend, I found myself not thinking about April showers, but baby showers. For the past week I have been contemplating a good gift to give the modern-day baby. Luckily, my girlfriend passed on the news about a new trendy, yet practical, infant shoe collection named Robeez.

I don’t know if it was the mini-high tops or Mary-Janes that sealed the deal, but there was something about the comfortable vibe they gave off that made me wish they carried Robeez in my size. I went ahead and picked up a pair for the shower, as well as a pair for the neighbor’s kid because I couldn’t help myself. Unlike other soft soled baby booties, Robeez has elastic bands to help keep them on your kid’s feet without having to deal with problematic socks. Not to mention, they are machine washable, which makes them even more appealing.

Stride Rite carries over 50 different styles for ages zero to six months, as well as slipper inspired styles for ages three to four years. Perfect for today’s eco-conscious consumer, Robeez are made from earth-friendly materials such as organic cotton canvas leathers and water tolerable inks—and they’re affordable! Robeez are selling for as cheap as $28 to $36 a pair, and the best part is that Stride Rite at WCS is offering several different Robeez styles for just $19.99!

Do you have a baby shower coming up? Find Robeez and other wonderful shoes at Stride Rite’s May Day Sale starting May 4 through the 17th. Enjoy saving 25%-50% off regular prices of selected styles, as well as some specialty marked items priced as low at $9.99. Hope to see you there!

Spring Has Sprung

Hi Ladies,

Spring in Oregon is as unpredictable as...well, every other season in Oregon. For a few weeks in March, I thought we were looking at an early summer, but the past week's wind and rain has got me thinking sun! I've been buying shirts and pants in light, bright colors in an effort to will summer to come.

More than once this week already, I have heard friends and strangers utter the phrase "April showers bring May flowers"...Well, I say Why Wait! Aside from spring-color shopping, one of my favorite things to do in the spring, when summer seems a little too far away, is head out to Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm for their amazing Tulip Festival. The farm has over 40 acres of tulips in every variety and color you could ever hope for and a kid's play area, including a Cow Train that you have to see to believe. Even you dog is invited, provided she stays on a leash.

There is an abundance of local food vendors and an adorable gift shop where you can buy fresh cut tulips or bulbs for annual enjoyment in your own back yard. But we all know that the real show-stopper is each breathtaking view of Holland's most renowned flower with a Mount Hood backdrop.

It's no surprise to find professional and amateur photographers alike snapping away at each photo-opp; from the giant wooden shoe to the John Deer tractor. If you consider yourself a budding photographer then you'll want to enter their "Catch the Color" photo contest with a number of categories to enter the snapshots you took on your visit to the farm. If you're in need of supplies, swing by The Shutterbug at Woodurn Compny Stores located off the same exit as Wooden Shoe. They're having a huge tent sale this Saturday, April 10th. After picking up a new lens for less, you can register for their free "Close-up & Landscape" photography workshop on April 17th. The workshop will take place at 8am in the beautiful Wooden Shoe tulip fields.

Can't make it this weekend? Don't worry; the Tulip Festival is open 9am-6pm daily from March 25 - April 25. It's only 8 miles from the Woodburn exit, 271, off I-5 and the cost is $5 per carload during the week and $10 on the weekend. To get you excited, I've included an event map and a link to this great video I found online.
